Martin Shaw has a clear and challenging grasp of mythology as practice. He leads us outside the study into the field itself. Shaw plunges into regions where the pathways are made by inhuman feet; our skin prickles as we feel the eyes of strange and tremendous beings peering through the understory at us. In Shaw’s approach to myth one must be prepared to become wholly lost, soiled and marked with the sacred muck from which we arose. Martin Shaw is as fine a teacher of mythic experience as I have encountered.
